The rumours are true, Newfoundlanders have their very own accent. It sounds like a mix between small town Alberta, Ottawa Valley and a lot of Irish. The classic Canadian "eh" is thrown in on every sentence as well. But some are stronger than others and this usually relates to if or how much the person has spent time off of the island. It also seems to weaken when speaking with tourists, which may be a result of the recent boom in tourism on the island. According to Lonely Planet it has become one of the world's newest travel hot spots due to its mountainous Gros Morne National Park, its whale-filled waters and the numerous amount of icebergs floating by its shores. Add to that some foot stomping music, great beer, partridgeberry sweets and cute puffins, and you've got a travellers paradise!
