We decided to swing by Stanstead, Quebec which lies on the border of Canada and the US ...literally! Here is the town's library that it shares with Derby Line, Vermont. It was created by Americans Carlos & Martha Haskell in 1904 as an initiative to foster friendship between the two countries. Even today both Canadians and Americans can freely enter its front door (which is in the US) and look through its modest book collection (which is in Canada)! There is a line on the floor that runs right through the middle of the building displaying the exact border. Coming back from the library we took the next right turn which apparently led us into the US aswe ended up passing through Canadian customs on the next block.
For residents of these towns, it gets a little more complicated. People looking to rent this house (in the 3rd picture) often have trouble since it too straddles the border line. The small street directly across from this house is aptly named "Canusa." If you live on the Canadian side you will have to swing by US border patrol before visiting the house across the street!
