Chainsaw Art

We made a stop on our way out of Vancouver in a little valley called Hope. Not only is the name of this place inspiring but apparently so are some of its residents. We were lucky enough to meet one of them named Peter Ryan. Pete is a world renowned artist known for wood carvings that he creates using chainsaws! Now this is no small Canadian hobby, Pete completed a 4 year degree in art and spent the last 40 years learning about his subjects and mastering his craft. He let us into the barn where he makes his pieces and even carved out a bear right in front of us within minutes. Despite his role in the Discovery Channel's show "Saw Dogs" and the high demand for his pieces, Pete has remained a down-to-earth guy who just wants to stay true to himself by spending his time doing what he loves. 30 pieces of his work decorate the town of Hope. Although this man has one solid head on his shoulders, he has a great sense of humour as well. He once carved a massive wooden cheque and sent it to a friend - the best part: it was cashable!
